Health, Care & Wellbeing

We recognise that children are happy and learn best when their physical, emotional and mental health needs are met. We aim to do all we can to offer your child the highest standards of care and attention.

If your child is unwell or has a serious accident whilst at school, the following procedures will be followed:

  1. A member of staff will initially look at the child. A second or third opinion will be sought if the original member is unsure.
  2. Parents/carers will be contacted.
  3. If the parent is unavailable, second contact points will be tried.
  4. If a second contact is unavailable, other contacts, where possible, will be asked to leave a message for the parent.
  5. Provided the child is in no apparent distress, he/she will be kept under supervision in the office until such time as contact is made with a nominated responsible person.
  6. In an emergency an ambulance will be called. However, the hospital could refuse to treat the child unless the parent/carer is present.

The School may only administer medication 48 hours after it has been prescribed by a doctor and if it is required 4 times a day. All such medication must be delivered to school by a parent/guardian and must be clearly labelled with the pupil’s name, the dosage and exact instructions as to administration. Parents complete and sign a consent form.

If your child is sick please keep him/her at home for 48 hours before returning him/her to school.

There are various systems in place in school to enable pupils to talk:

  • Class Discussions: During PSHCE (Personal, Social, Emotional Health & Citizenship Education) and throughout the school day.
  • 1:1 with a Trusted Adult: Pupils are encouraged to talk to their Teacher, Teaching Assistant, Midday Assistant or any other trusted adult in the school about anything that is concerning them.
  • Learning Mentor Arranged Sessions: It may be appropriate for a pupil to meet regularly with the Learning Mentor for an agreed period of time.
  • Counselling: Professional age-appropriate counselling is available in school for pupils with significant emotional needs - please arrange an appointment with our SENCO if you would like to discuss this.
  • The Maze: Our Learning Mentor runs lunchtime drop-in sessions for any child who would like the chance to have a chat.

Bullying of any kind is unacceptable and will not be tolerated at our school. At our school the safety, welfare and well-being of all pupils and staff are a key priority. We take all incidences of bullying seriously, and it is our duty as a whole school community to take measures to prevent and tackle any bullying, harassment or discrimination.

Please see our Anti-Bullying Policy for more details.

Fawbert & Barnard’s Primary School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff, volunteers and visitors to share this commitment.

Mrs Ovonlen is the Designated Safeguarding Lead in the school. In her absence, Mrs Caroline Derriman, Mr Jack Downey, Miss Molly Sansom, Mrs Lee De Howes and Mrs Jay Hutchinson are the Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads.

Schools are required to report any obvious or suspected case of child abuse, which includes non-accidental injury, neglect, emotional, physical and/or sexual abuse, to Social Care.

This procedure is intended to protect children at risk and schools are encouraged to take the attitude that ‘it could happen here’ and where there are grounds for concern, it is better to be safe than sorry.

The school's Child Protection Policy can be found here.

Please ensure that all children are fully supervised - including siblings not of school age - when you are collecting children or visiting the school. Children in the Year 1 and 2 area should wait with their parents on the playground.

Climbing Equipment

Children and siblings are not allowed to use the climbing equipment in the Foundation Stage area, meadow or on the school field without supervision. The school will not be held liable for any accidents that may occur.

Fences and Gates

Please do not allow your child to climb on any fences or gates around the school. Children are taught they are not allowed to press the grey buttons which open the gates. Please support us with this.

Ponds

The school has an environmental area at one corner of the field near the Year 1 classroom. In this area there are three ponds. The area is secured so that children can not play unsupervised near them.

Over 95% of pharmacies in England now provide the NHS Pharmacy First service which supports people in certain age groups who need help with:

  • Earache (aged 1 to 17 years)
  • Impetigo (aged 1 year and over)
  • Infected insect bites (aged 1 year and over)
  • Shingles (aged 18 years and over)
  • Sinusitis (aged 12 years and over)
  • Sore throats (aged 5 years and over)
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women (aged 16 to 64 years)

If your child or you have symptoms that suggest you may have one of these conditions, you can walk into a pharmacy and be offered a consultation with a pharmacist in a private consultation room. Your GP surgery can also refer people to a pharmacy for the service.

Pharmacists will provide advice and, if clinically necessary, offer an NHS medicine to treat the condition (these medicines are supplied free of charge to children under 16 years, with the normal NHS prescription charge rules applying to people aged 16 or over). They will then send an electronic message to the GP surgery, so they can update their patient records.

Should the pharmacist be unable to help, you will be directed to your GP surgery or other health professional as appropriate.

If your child or you have symptoms that suggest one of the above conditions, why not give the Pharmacy First service a try?

Please see below a variety of support available to families.

Food Bank

The School are in partnership with the Harlow Food Bank and can supply food parcels for those in need. Please speak with a member of staff on the gate or e-mail us for further details.

Kids Eat Free

Please see the attached flyer listing places where children can eat free over the summer holidays.

Bounty Club

The Bounty Club is a low-cost outlet of short-life fresh food that has been operating for around 5 months. Up to 100 households a day are now taking advantage of supporting their weekly shop with a £2.50 bag of items worth around £25 that they pick up from wholesalers daily.

This is helping those who used the Foodbank to loosen their dependency on the service (or preventing others from needing it) at a time when money is short to most of us.

Users can go to the Bounty Club once a week. A household cannot use the Bounty Club and the Foodbank in the same week. It needs no referral. Click on the link above for further information.

The National Healthy Schools Programme is an exciting long-term initiative which is making a significant difference to the health and achievement of children and young people. The National Healthy Schools Programme supports the links between health, behaviour and achievement; it is about creating healthy and happy children and young people, who do better in learning and in life.

Children and young people in our Healthy School tell us that they feel healthier, happier and safer. Parents tell us that they feel more involved in their child’s health and learning and often feel better themselves.

The impact of the programme is based on a whole-school approach to physical and emotional well-being focused on four core themes:

  • Personal, Social & Health Education
  • Healthy Eating
  • Physical Activity
  • Emotional Health & Wellbeing

The whole school approach involves working with children, parents, school staff, governors and the whole school community to provide a solid foundation from which developments and improvement are embedded in a systematic way. These processes contribute to the physical and emotional development of all members of the school community.

We were thrilled to have our Healthy Schools status revalidated and would like to share the pre-recorded congratulations message from Adrian Coggins (Head of Wellbeing and Public Health) on behalf of Essex County Council and the Essex Child and Family Wellbeing Service (see the link below).

This service provides information and resources that can improve health and wellbeing for all. Their campaigns are interactive with real-life practical learning examples, including web links to resources that can be used at home.

They have also produced a guide for families entitled "Let's talk a common language and understanding of emotional wellbeing and mental health".

They are also offering parents 30 minute virtual appointments to discuss their Child or young person’s current emotional wellbeing challenges, offering strategies to support them, signposting to online services and recommending services that best support children and young people.

Supporting Children, Young People and Families Emotional Wellbeing and Mental Health on their Return to Education

The following links have been provided by Essex County Council:

The Essex Wellbeing Service will be providing navigators to help you find the right support for pupil’s and their families emotional wellbeing and mental health needs on the return to education. This is an early intervention offer to provide additional support to education settings on top of what you will already be offering.   The Essex Wellbeing Service has developed a navigator service to both signpost and provide a triage service depending on the needs of your pupils and their families.

To access the Essex Wellbeing Service navigators, phone this number: 0300 303 9988. This is accessible from the 8th March 2021.  Families can use this directly, or request support from school/setting staff. There will be promotional materials available to share this vital information with families.

Recovery and Return to Educational Settings suite of resources has two further webinars for families:

Please share these links with your families to provide them with some helpful advice and information to support their emotional wellbeing and mental health.

The Essential Living Fund is available for families who need emergency help with heating, water, food, bills and other essential household items. Families can call 0300 7900 124 (8:45am-5:00pm).

National and local research findings are indicating that social, emotional and mental health needs continue to be a priority and concern. There are four themes that we have prioritised:

  • Essex’s social, emotional and mental health pillars of support
  • Disordered eating
  • Self-injury (self-harm)
  • Loneliness and isolation

We will be providing helpful succinct information in a poster format about how to support children, young people and families in these areas.

The Essex Family Support Service, part of the Essex Child & Family Wellbeing Service, helps families with children age 8 to 19 and low level needs to feel more resilient and happier. Referral by a professional or families themselves, families@community360.org.uk, 01206 505250.

Registered Charity No. 1148170

Fawbert and Barnard’s Primary School is committed to develop provision for young carers and their families. In December 2020, Fawbert and Barnard's Primary School had received the Bronze Young Carers Award

Our Young carers lead at Fawbert and Barnard's Primary School is Mrs Lee De Howes, Learning Mentor.

We will capture the commitment by widening our provision, building on the needs of the young people and better meet young carers’ needs by reviewing Fawbert and Barnard’s Primary School provision for young carers with a view to ultimately achieving best practice.

How we will achieve this:

  • The whole school is committed to meeting the needs of young carers so that they can attend and enjoy school in the same way as other pupil/students and achieve their potential.
  • Appointing a designated Young Carers’ School Lead with responsibility for young carers and their families. Pupils and families will be made aware of the identity of this lead and how to contact them to access support.
  • The school only shares information with professionals and agencies on a need to know basis in order to support pupils and their families.
  • Fawbert and Barnard’s Primary School will actively seek feedback and ideas from young carers and their families to shape and improve support.
  • The school has an effective referral system and strong partnership in place with relevant external agencies, including referral to Young Carer agencies providing key workers who will work with young carers and families.

We will strive to achieve best practice for students and families in our school in order to provide them with the best chance of success in their future.
