SCHOOL LUNCHES

Our school lunches are provided by the HCL catering company.  Please click here for their welcome letter to find out more about them.  They provide a tasty, varied three-week menu.  The winter menu starts from 4 November 2024.  All food is farm assured, sourced from small local suppliers and is freshly prepared every day on our premises. School lunches currently cost £2.57 per day.

All children in Reception, Year 1 and 2 are entitled to a Universal Free School Meal (UnFSM).  If your family is on a low income, and you would have qualified for FSM under the old system, please still tell us, as this helps the school budget.  You can make an application by clicking here. We also have food bank boxes available. Please contact the school office if you feel these would benefit you.

School dinners are available for everyone who wishes to have them. We operate a pre-booking system via Schoolgrid and orders can be made in advance or on the day up until 8:55 am. Free school meals and Universal Free School Meals for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 will be available every day but have to be booked in advance.  Meals ordered but not eaten will be charged for.

Children with food allergies / intolerances need to be registered with HCL to obtain a special menu that is available to suit their medical requirements.  HCL operates a nut-free menu, so there is no need to apply for this allergy.  Please click here for further information.

Children in Years 3-6 should make payment through the Schoolgrid on-line payment system.  The system will not allow orders without payment; hence, all KS2 dinners must be paid for in advance.

Should no order be placed for any child, parents will be contacted to bring a packed lunch to school.

PACKED LUNCHES

Children can bring a balanced, healthy packed lunch in a small (named) lunch-box.  Unbreakable flasks and cartons of non-fizzy drinks are acceptable.  Cans and glass bottles are not allowed.

Children may have cereal bars in their packed lunch, but sweets, chocolate and chewing gum are not permitted at any time.  For some helpful tips on what their lunch box should contain as well as lots of easy-to-prepare ideas your children will love, please click on the following link.  Please note we are unable to heat food that is sent in from home.

DRINKING DURING THE DAY

Children may bring a bottle of water from home to drink throughout the day.  There is also a water fountain in the main playground which can be used by the children during break, lunchtimes and in PE lessons.

SNACKS DURING THE DAY

At Fawbert and Barnard’s we are aware of the importance of a healthy diet. The children have a 15-minute break in the morning when they can have a drink from their water bottles and a snack as follows:

Infant children are provided with a piece of fruit or vegetable each day under the government scheme and therefore do not need to bring anything into school for a morning snack.

Junior children may bring a piece of fresh fruit, vegetable or a small amount of dried fruit as a morning snack. On occasions, we have fruit available from the Harlow Food Bank.
