Health, Care & Wellbeing

We recognise that children are happy and learn best when their physical, emotional and mental health needs are met. We aim to do all we can to offer your child the highest standards of care and attention.

ILLNESS OR SERIOUS ACCIDENT WHILST AT SCHOOL

If your child is unwell or has a serious accident whilst at school, the following procedures will be followed:

A member of staff will initially look at the child. A second or third opinion will be sought if the original member is unsure.
Parents/carers will be contacted.
If the parent is unavailable, second contact points will be tried.
If a second contact is unavailable, other contacts, where possible, will be asked to leave a message for the parent.
Provided the child is in no apparent distress, he/she will be kept under supervision in the office until such time as contact is made with a nominated responsible person.
In an emergency an ambulance will be called. However, the hospital could refuse to treat the child unless the parent/carer is present.

MEDICINE

The School may only administer medication 48 hours after it has been prescribed by a doctor and if it is required 4 times a day. All such medication must be delivered to school by a parent/guardian and must be clearly labelled with the pupil’s name, the dosage and exact instructions as to administration. Parents complete and sign a consent form.

HEAD LICE

Occasionally head lice may be suspected. On these occasions a member of staff will discreetly check a child’s hair. Parents are telephoned to collect and treat their child if head lice are detected. For advice on treatment, click here.

SCHOOL NURSE

The School Health Service provides confidential advice and support about health matters to school age children and their families. To contact the school nurse telephone 0300 247 0122 or an appointment can be arranged through the school office. PASTORAL CARE AND EMOTIONAL WELLBEING

There are various systems in place in school to enable pupils to talk:

Class discussions	During PSHCE (Personal, Social, Emotional Health & Citizenship Education) and throughout the school day
1:1 with a trusted adult	Pupils are encouraged to talk to their Teacher, Teaching Assistant, Midday Assistant or any other trusted adult in the school about anything that is concerning them
The Maze	Our Learning Mentor runs lunchtime drop-in sessions for any child who would like the chance to have a chat. Read more ...
Learning Mentor arranged sessions	It may be appropriate for a pupil to meet regularly with the Learning Mentor for an agreed period of time.
Counselling	Professional age-appropriate counselling is available in school for pupils with significant emotional needs – please arrange an appointment with our SENCO if you would like to discuss this.

ANTI-BULLYING

Bullying of any kind is unacceptable and will not be tolerated at our school. At our school the safety, welfare and well-being of all pupils and staff are a key priority. We take all incidences of bullying seriously, and it is our duty as a whole school community to take measures to prevent and tackle any bullying, harassment or discrimination.

SAFEGUaRDING

Fawbert & Barnard’s Primary School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff, volunteers and visitors to share this commitment.

Mrs Ovonlen is the Designated Safeguarding Lead in the school. In her absence, Mrs Caroline Derriman, Mr Sam Mortimer and Mrs Lee De Howes are the Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads.

Schools are required to report any obvious or suspected case of child abuse, which includes non-accidental injury, neglect, emotional, physical and/or sexual abuse, to Social Care.

This procedure is intended to protect children at risk and schools are encouraged to take the attitude that ‘it could happen here’ and where there are grounds for concern, it is better to be safe than sorry.

CHILD SAFETY IN THE SCHOOL GROUNDS

Please ensure that all children are fully supervised – including siblings not of school age - when you are collecting children or visiting the school. Children in the Year 1 and 2 area should wait with their parents on the playground.

Climbing Equipment

Children and siblings are not allowed to use the climbing equipment in the Foundation Stage area, meadow or on the school field without supervision. The school will not be held liable for any accidents that may occur.

Fences and gates

Please do not allow your child to climb on any fences or gates around the school. Children are taught they are not allowed to press the grey buttons which open the gates. Please support us with this.

Ponds

The school has an environmental area at one corner of the field near the Year 1 classroom. In this area there are three ponds. The area is secured so that children can not play unsupervised near them.
